Undertone

The fixed, underlying warmth or coolness of your skin, separate from surface tone or a tan.

Undertone is the underlying warmth or coolness beneath the skin's surface color, the quality that stays constant no matter how tanned, pale, flushed or sun-damaged the surface looks. In seasonal color analysis it sits on the hue axis, described as running from warm, a yellow or golden cast, through neutral to cool, a blue or pink cast. Undertone is what actually decides whether a color flatters or fights the face: a warm-undertoned person generally looks healthiest next to yellow-based colors and gold jewelry, a cool-undertoned person next to blue-based colors and silver, while neutral-undertoned people can often wear either with care. It is frequently confused with overtone, the surface cast that shifts with tanning, flushing or lighting, and with overall depth or contrast, which are separate axes entirely. Common home tests, the vein test, the white-paper test, the gold-versus-silver test, each offer a clue but none is reliable alone; the most consistent approach compares two candidate colors against bare, makeup-free skin in daylight at the same time.

Why it matters

Undertone is the single biggest lever in color analysis: getting it right narrows a wardrobe from thousands of shades to the few dozen that make skin look clear and healthy rather than sallow or grey. Every one of the twelve seasons is built around a specific undertone reading.
